WASHINGTON — DC native Phillip Board grew up in Mayfair and around other parts of the District. He remembers what happened in April of 1968.

"Teachers sent all the kids home. Schools shut down early. There was a lot of panic," he recalled, "I remember a few days later, going up to northwest Washington, driving through some areas, and you could see and smell the smoke in the city."

Board was in elementary school at the time and remembers being baffled by it all.

"There was a sense of curiosity and excitement because you know, soldiers, boom boom boom," he explained, "but then when I looked around and saw my parents and how they were concerned and borderline anxious. I think that’s when the fear started developing inside me."
