When Dan Borne applied to be the public address announcer in Tiger Stadium in 1986, his voice was the only one heard. The job was his, virtually by default.

That wasn’t the case after Borne announced his retirement in July. LSU has received about 40 formal applications to fill Borne’s role, a search that has reached the red zone with the Tigers’ Sept. 6 home opener against Louisiana Tech drawing closer.

It is a huge responsibility, and a huge void to fill. The seat in Tiger Stadium’s PA booth has had precious few occupants. Since 1955, only three people have held the job: late WAFB weatherman Sid Crocker from 1955-85, Borne and Bill Franques.
