IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Preston Mayhew was in a scary situation. The West Branch student got into a dangerous car crash.

Mayhew went into a ditch after his car rolled. With the roof pressing on his head, a phone alert went out to a close friend, and a City High cross country teammate.

“I got a notification that he got in a car crash. I didn’t know. Sometimes the phones are wrong or mistaken. So I called him right away to see if he was okay,” said Joseph Schlitz.

Mayhew answered the call through his watch.

“I was glad he called because it kind of helped me through it to know that he at least cared,” said Mayhew.

Mayhew then went to the hospital. There was concern that he would become paralyzed below the waist. Some teammates literally ran to the hospital to visit him.
