Year two for the Aztecs under Sean Lewis will feature a new starting quarterback, and as expected Michigan transfer Jayden Denegal won the job.

Lewis delivered the news to the junior from Apple Valley on Tuesday, and spoke to reporters about the decision Wednesday. He said the choice started to become clear late in the spring, and was cemented in the early portion of fall camp.

"The leadership that Jayden had exhibited and the way that he showed up from day one and all the way through," Lewis said. "Really through this third quarter of camp, the consistency and the efficiency and the production when he's got the ball in his hands and when he's leading and driving the offense ultimately led us to this place we're at. Now we gotta go do the next thing the right way."
