DELTONA, Fla. (WJW) – A 14-year-old Florida boy is being hospitalized after he was hit by a car on the first day of school while riding his bike in Deltona.

According to a press release from the Volusia Sheriff's Office, the 14-year-old boy was riding his e-bike to school on the sidewalk of Howland Boulevard when he approached Roble Lane. When the victim was crossing the crosswalk, the driver of a Kia Soul entered the crosswalk at a low speed, attempting to turn onto Howland Boulevard.

According to the release, the vehicle dragged the boy about 15 feet before coming to a stop with the boy trapped underneath.

Witnesses, including a passing tow truck driver, stopped to help the boy. They were able to lift the vehicle and move the victim to safety, the release said.
