Great Smoky Mountains Natl. Park — Dwight McCarter, known for tracking lost souls through the Great Smoky Mountains and rescuing at least 26 people along the way, has died at the age of 80.

According to a post from his son, Dwight spent a lot of his life as a park ranger for GSMNP, and was regarded as the "best man tracker on the eastern seaboard."

Dwight wrote three books, titled "Lost!," "Mayday! Mayday!," and "Meigs Line."

His son, Rob, said his father could hike 30 miles without breaking a sweat, even at 75 years old.

"As a ranger he rescued over 100 people in the 30 years he spent as a park ranger," Rob said. "He was a storyteller. A tour guide. A naturalist."
