NEWBURY — A Central Street industrial building was evacuated Tuesday morning after a reported gas leak, according to Fire Chief David Evans. On Tuesday, Aug. 12, around 7:50 a.m., local firefighters responded to 19 Central St., for report of an odor of gas. Crews could smell gas consistent with propane coming from the first floor of the building. All occupants of the building were clear of the building by the time firefighters arrived.

Crews detected low levels of gas in the building, at which point they requested the Rowley Fire Department send an additional engine. The department shut off the building’s gas supply and contacted the supplier, Eastern Propane & Oil. A company technician later arrived and was able to locate and stop the leak, which was found in the attic of the building.
