MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - Montpelier is at a crisis point. That’s what Montpelier’s acting city manager told city councilors Wednesday night in a meeting centered on strategies to tackle mental health and homelessness in the capital.

Councilors weighed a $50,000 contract with Washington County Mental Health and an update to their encampment policy.

State funding for an embedded mental health crisis counselor for Montpelier and Barre is coming to an end.

Now, the capital city has to decide how they move forward without them.

The police chief proposed spending $50,000 of budgeted funds on a contract with Washington County Mental Health, where their workers would be dispatched on overtime on an as-needed basis.
