HALAWA, Hawaii (Island News) -- As the ground lease for the new Aloha Stadium moves forward, the stadium’s demolition begins later this month and the project’s completion date has been pushed back to March 2029.
The Aloha Stadium Authority Board initiated a ground lease with Aloha Halawa Development Partners on Wednesday and work will soon get underway. By the end of the month crews will start demolishing the stadium with over 50 years of history.
The new stadium was originally set to have 25,000 seats which has been whittled down to 22,500, a smaller seating footprint.
Brennon Morioka, a former Aloha Stadium Authority Board chair and the dean of University of Hawaii’s College of Engineering said, “You got to take down the old in order to build the new.”
