GILFORD TOWNSHIP, Michigan — A van carrying several members of an Amish community was hit by a pickup truck Tuesday, killing six people, authorities say.
Five of the dead were Amish, WJRT Channel 12 reports . One person in the pickup truck also was killed.
A news release from the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office says the crash occurred at 4:44 p.m. at an intersection in Gilford Township, which is about 100 miles north of Detroit.
The pickup truck, which had three people inside, went through a stop sign and hit the van, which had 10 people inside, the news release says. The force of the collision caused multiple people to be ejected from the van and the pickup, the sheriff’s office says.
In addition to the fatalities, six people were injured. Only one person didn’t require medical aid.
