KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A mother and her son are expected to make full recoveries after both were rescued from Versluis Lake on Wednesday.

The Plainfield Township Fire Department responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m. on reports of two drownings.

Authorities say a boy had swum past the swimming area buoys and went under the water. His mother then attempted to rescue him, but also reportedly went under.

Both were pulled from the lake by bystanders. The boy was initially unresponsive but was awake and responsive by the time firefighters responded three minutes later.

First responders treated both mother and son at the scene and took them to a hospital. They are expected to make full recoveries, authorities say.
