SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. —

Bus drivers in the Elk Grove Unified School District, represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), are pushing for higher wages and improved benefits as contract negotiations with the district have reached a standstill.

Crystal McGee Lee, president of ATU #256, highlighted the challenges in retaining drivers, emphasizing the need for improved financial incentives—including life and medical insurance.

"One of the biggest issues with Elk Grove School District is retainment and ATU has been trying to enlighten them on how to retain and one of those things is obviously finances and there’s other ways to enhance your finances: your life insurance, your medical insurance, things of that nature, and so we’re losing drivers," McGee Lee said.
