GRIFFITH — Local firefighters are grieving this week's loss of a longtime member of the department.

Battalion Chief Scott DeLauro died Monday at the age of 68, officials said.

"Chief DeLauro was one of the most active and dedicated members of our department, serving our community with honor and distinction since 1983," the department said. "His leadership, commitment, and unwavering service have left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to work alongside him."

DeLauro was retired as a mechanic from Inland Steel after 41 years on the job, according to his obituary. He was a former Griffith Little League coach and amateur radio operator.

A memorial service is planned for 7 p.m. Friday at White Funeral Home at 921 W. Glen Park Ave. in Griffith.
