1938’s Bringing Up Baby is an exemplar of the “screwball comedy,” another purely entertaining exercise. This one originally lost money at the box office. Screwball comedy gets its name from the screwball, a type of breaking pitch in baseball that moves in the opposite direction from all other breaking pitches. So it’s appropriate that Baby ultimately became a huge hit.
