LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - On this day 10 years ago, Nebraska was the first state to use opioid fentanyl in an execution.

This was used in the execution of Carey Dean Moore. The 60-year-old spent more than half his life on death row for the killing of two cab drivers in Omaha in 1979.

Moore’s execution was carried out at the State Penitentiary in Lincoln, the first in 21 years.

Executions have been an issue of some debate in Nebraska , having been repealed in 2015 and voters reinstating it a year later.
