WASHINGTON — DC Police Chief Pamela Smith is paving the way for limited cooperation with federal immigration personnel amid a government takeover of the department, according to an executive order obtained by WUSA9 on Thursday.
The order says that effective immediately, members of DC Police may assist federal immigration enforcement agencies with information on people who are not in police custody ─ as well as provide transportation for immigration employees.
However, the order reinforces that members of MPD are still not permitted to give immigration officials information on when someone in their custody is going to be released ─ their location, address, personal identifying information, photos or information on their criminal case.
