COLUMBUS, N.C. — The U.S. Geological Survey reported an earthquake occurred late Thursday morning in western North Carolina.

WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich shared that it happened around 11:14 a.m., with the USGS recording it as 2.7 magnitude quake. However, Panovich noted local sensors recorded it at a 2.9 magnitude.

The epicenter was west of the Mill Spring community, near the towns of Columbus and Tryon, or about 42 miles southeast of Asheville. Panovich shared images of the seismograph on X, which was captured across the state line in Blacksburg, South Carolina.

Panovich also noted the earthquake was widely felt in the region.
