NORTH CHARLESTON — Police charged a 27-year-old man in a fatal hit and run crash that occurred in the early hours of Aug. 5.

Lewis Pinckney is charged with leaving the scene of a collision with death in the crash that killed 47-year-old Herbert Dawson.

Dawson was on foot when he was hit near the intersection of Rivers Avenue and Piggly Wiggly Drive.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, police officers responded to the scene at approximately 1:45 a.m. Aug. 5. The vehicle had fled the scene and Dawson was deceased. Officers discovered pieces of a Ford vehicle, such as a Ford grill emblem, and grey chips of paint, the affidavit states.
