A fire that destroyed the last community fridge in St. Catharines has also damaged the movement.
A community fridge operated by volunteer organization Community Fridge Niagara caught fire at about 4:40 a.m. on July 30, at its location at 85 Church St., outside Bridges Niagara.
Volunteer Jem Barrel-Tower said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, which left the fridge unsalvageable but, luckily, did not affect the host site building.
“We were alerted by our host site (Bridges Niagara) there was a fire, and they were on site, and that the fire was extinguished, but obviously the existing structure and burnt-down fridge were posing some safety concerns,” she said.
