DENVER (KDVR) — More than a month after a large wildfire burned thousands of acres in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, the affected south rim area will soon reopen.

The South Rim Fire began when lightning ignited it on July 10 during the same weather event that also caused several other Colorado wildfires. It burned more than 4,000 acres between then and Aug. 3, when officials stopped updating the fire's InciWeb page once the fire began getting under control.

At that last update, the fire behavior was limited to just smoldering and creeping and was 52% contained.

The National Park had been entirely closed during the fire's active blaze, with the north rim area reopening in late July. Park officials said the south rim of the park will reopen on Monday, Aug. 18.
