CROWN POINT — Prosecutors filed charges Wednesday against a man who brought a firearm on school property Tuesday afternoon at West Side High School Leadership Academy in Gary, Lake Criminal Court records show.

De'Andre Hicks, 21, of Gary, was charged with felony possession of a firearm on school property or a school bus. Hicks was arrested Thursday and posted a $1,500 cash bond, court records show. His first formal court appearance has not yet been scheduled.

Hicks told police he brought his gun to the school to defend his sister who had been involved in an altercation with a male student. While he was in a police cruiser on the way to the police station, he said what he did was "wrong" and "stupid," according to a probable cause affidavit.
