The state is allocating $21.4 million for improvements to a segment of Route 3 in Bedford, pending possible adjustments as the project progresses.

And even though construction is not expected to start for another three to four years, project team members shared concepts with the Bedford Town Council at its meeting on Wednesday.

Town Manager Rick Sawyer noted that Bedford has been petitioning the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDoT) for improvements to the Route 3 corridor, aka South River Road, for decades.

This is partly because of the frequent accidents along this corridor. From 2014 to 2023, there were 156 car crashes on the 1.7-mile segment of road. In 2014 alone there were 24 crashes.
