GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Earthquakes are actually common across South Carolina and North Carolina, they just tend to be small ones. We’ve had 2 in South Carolina and 3 in North Carolina within the last 5 days, which does seem like a lot at once.

Earthquakes occur often in the Carolinas because of small fault lines scattered through the state. Below is an example of the faults in South Carolina. A lot of these are ancient faults from the formation of the super continent millions of years ago. These earthquakes are considered intraplate earthquakes in the North American plate.

‘On average we see 10-20 quakes per year, but some years are more than others. 2022 brought about triple that number as a swarm of earthquakes occurred in the Midlands.
