SANTA FE, N.M. —

An ongoing measles outbreak in Santa Fe County has pushed New Mexico's case total to 100.

The three new cases involve unvaccinated Santa Fe County residents.

Measles can infect others four days before rash onset and four additional days after it appears. The virus can remain in the air of enclosed spaces for two hours after an infected person has left.

More than 48,600 New Mexicans have received the MMR vaccine since the start of February to Wednesday, Aug. 13, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

Dr. Miranda Durham, state Department of Health chief medical officer, said the outbreak could have been worse without the vaccination efforts taken.
