BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- The East Baton Rouge Metro Council passed an ordinance that would create new rules for smoke and vape shops within the parish.

The ordinance defines what a smoke or vape shop is and what they sell. It also sets location limits. It was authored by council members Rowdy Gaudet, Denise Amoroso, Carolyn Coleman, and Twahna Harris.

Shops and their signs must be at least 500 feet away from: • Schools. • Churches. • Libraries. • Daycares. • Parks. • Other smoke or vape shops.

According to the ordinance, stores that don’t meet these rules can keep operating. However, they will be labeled “nonconforming” and must follow special development code rules.
