STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) – The Steuben County Sheriff is warning residents of a new phone scam that has surfaced in the area.

In a release, Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard announced that on Thursday, Aug. 14, a resident from the Painted Post area reported that they had received a call from a person who claimed to be a police officer.

The resident stated that during the call, the person claimed that the resident was a delinquent for jury duty and that they needed to pay fines via a text voucher to avoid arrest.

Sheriff Allard is advising residents that this call is a scam and that no member of law enforcement will solicit money over the phone to avoid the arrest of any person. Anyone who receives a call like this is instructed to hang up and call 911 or their local law enforcement o
