An Edmonton police officer has been charged with assault in connection with a traffic stop last year.

The Edmonton Police Service says police stopped a Dodge Challenger with an expired licence plate on June 21, 2024.

Police allege the 52-year-old man behind the wheel became aggressive and was arrested.

“Subsequent to the arrest, a further physical struggle ensued, and the driver suffered minor injuries,” the EPS said in a news release. “Paramedics attended the scene to treat and assess the driver, though he did not require transport to hospital.”

A investigation by the EPS Professional Standards Branch (PSB) was referred to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Services in Calgary, and prosecutors recommended the EPS officer be charged.
