EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — A group of mosquitoes from a surveillance trap in Evansville tested positive for West Nile Virus, marking the first positive test in Vanderburgh County this year.
The Vanderburgh County Health Department is urging the public to take precautions against mosquito bites.
This advisory comes after 294 positive mosquito samples were detected in 61 counties across Indiana, with a human case reported in Vanderburgh County in July.
"While most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms, some people will develop a more severe form of the disease," the health department said.
Those over 60-years-old and individuals with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for severe symptoms.
The health department will continue effort
