GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Native American community showed up at Brown County Court this week over the death of a two-year-old boy, and the man charged with causing that death.
Leo Escalante died in June after being hospitalized for an incident at a home on the east side of Green Bay. Authorities say he was in the care of 21-year-old James Vanderleest, who is now facing a charge of first-degree reckless homicide.
Vanderleest said that Leo accidentally fell down the stairs, but prosecutors say the little boy had injuries to his head, scalp and face that couldn’t be explained by a fall. As Vanderleest appeared in court Thursday afternoon, supporters of the little boy also showed up to the courthouse.
