Nine new townhouses set to rise in Welland will mark Habitat for Humanity Niagara ’s largest build project on a single site to date in the region.
The $2-million affordable housing project broke ground Thursday morning on the southwest corner of First Street and Plymouth Road . Six townhomes will face First Street, while the remaining three will be built behind them.
Construction on the first units will take place over the winter, with the final three scheduled to begin next spring, said Habitat chief executive officer Mark Carl.
Carl said the project has seen strong support from the community, the City of Welland, businesses and local trades. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Cotton Inc. employees were already on site, working on the foundation.
