SALEM, Va. (WDBJ) - Veterans in Salem are experiencing longer wait times and reduced access to care as staffing shortages within the Department of Veterans Affairs deepen nationwide, according to a new report from the VA Office of Inspector General.

The report found the Veterans Health Administration reported 4,434 severe occupational vacancies in 2025, a 50% increase from last year.

The shortages span both clinical roles, including nurses, physicians and mental health providers, and non-clinical positions such as police and security officers. More than 58% of VA facilities reported severe police and security shortages, making it the most common non-clinical gap.
