WATERFORD, Conn. — A deer found in Waterford tested positive for rabies , according to the Ledge Light Health District .

The test came back Tuesday. Environmental Health Supervisor Katie Baldwin said the deer was found dead by a resident on Gun Shot Road.

She said the resident contacted the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Wildlife Division and the deer was taken to a lab for testing.

"It's pretty rare, but it's not impossible. They're not typically a vector for rabies to other animals or humans," Baldwin said.

She said it's still a good reminder to stay cautious around wildlife.

"While deer are not a normal vector for the spread of rabies, people do like to engage with wildlife. They like to be friends with wildlife. So we just try to remind everybod
