PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Karmen Nixon was only 16 years old when she was shot eight times at a New Year's Eve party on Dec. 29, 2023.

Nearly two years later, the Port Arthur Memorial High School graduate is preparing to start college as a nursing student, inspired by the medical professionals who saved her life.

Nixon spent 10 days in the ICU and continues her recovery. She will attend Prairie View A&M University this week to pursue nursing, turning tragedy into testimony.

"I feel like everybody should have a chance and live life to the fullest, to the absolute fullest," Nixon said.

The shooting happened while Nixon was attending a New Year's Eve party.

According to court documents, Marcus Glen Kemper and a 15-year-old were arrested in connection with the shooting. Police allege Kemper
