Vikings rest JJ McCarthy — former Gophers QB now has golden shot to impress

The Minnesota Vikings won’t be playing former Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy this week against the Patriots. Coach Kevin O’Connell said Thursday that a bunch of starters won’t suit up, which opens the door for younger guys to get some time on the field.

That includes Sam Howell, who will get the start, but also Max Brosmer, a former Gophers quarterback. Brosmer has been showing well in training camp, and with McCarthy sitting out, he’s likely to get more snaps than before.
