COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- August 14, 2025 marked the 90th anniversary of social security, the federal program created to provide monthly benefits to Americans and a source of income for those over the age of 65.
A birthday celebration was held at the Colonie Senior Service Center to honor the milestone. Officials said the event comes at a critical time as the program faces looming funding cuts, staffing reductions within the agency, and potential benefit decreases.
Sen. Chuck Schumer attended the celebration and spoke about the importance of social security for people in the region.
The senator said social security is a benefit Americans earn over a lifetime of work, and it should not be in jeopardy of being taken away.
