As Clay Holmes’ first season as a major-league starting pitcher nears 25 starts, the external question marks remain.
Holmes’ 126 innings pitched are double his 63 thrown for the Yankees in each of the last two seasons. Before this year, the Mets righthander never had thrown more than 70 innings in a season.
Mets starters have pitched an MLB-low 241 2/3 innings since June 11. Holmes has not completed six innings since June 7.
When asked if Holmes will remain a starter the rest of the season, manager Carlos Mendoza said that “he’s going to keep getting opportunities.” Holmes is expecting the same.
