Elie Martel , who served as the NDP MPP for the former riding of Sudbury East for two decades, has died. He was 91.

“I was saddened to learn today of the passing of former Sudbury East MPP Elie Martel,” Michael S. Bellmore, chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, said in a post on Facebook. “Elie worked hard at Queen’s Park and (throughout) the riding and Greater Sudbury to ensure better opportunities for all.

“His distinct voice and size made him a gentle giant in the Legislature. He was a gifted orator, a fierce advocate, a loyal friend, a beloved husband and father and unabashedly a Capreolite.
