AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) opened a safety investigation into the Leander ISD school bus crash that happened on Wednesday, the federal agency announced Thursday.

The NTSB investigates significant events involving modes of transportation including railroad, transit, highway, marine, pipeline and commercial space, according to the agency's website.

The investigation comes after 17 children and a bus driver were taken to the hospital after their bus rolled over in the Sandy Creek area of Travis County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Two children had serious injuries, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.
