BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. — The state of North Carolina will assume temporary leadership of Bertie County's child welfare services at the county's Department of Social Services (BCDSS) beginning Friday.

The state is allowed to assume temporary control of social service departments due to state law , at the discretion of the North Carolina Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Secretary, Devdutta Sangvai. However, it's only the fifth time that the state has ever done so, yet it's the second time they have done so for Bertie County.
