The first confirmed tornado of the year to touch down in the province occurred in a remote area of the northwest region late last month.
Researchers with Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University confirmed that an EF2 tornado touched down on July 27 near Law Lake, just north of Mine Centre and approximately 63 kilometres northeast of Fort Frances.
The team were able to confirm the tornado through satellite imagery that revealed a storm track of damage 5.58 kilometres long and 260 metres wide.
It is estimated the twister created maximum windspeeds of up to 190 kilometres per hour and travelled in a west-southwest direction.
The tornado was classified as an EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with EF0 being the lowest grade on the scale, and EF5 being the highest.
