NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Tennessee Senate Judiciary Committee held a summer study hearing Thursday as they weigh whether or not to change the state’s felony murder and criminal liability laws.

The laws currently on the books allow prosecutors to charge people with a murder for a death that happened while they were committing a different crime, even if they didn’t pull the trigger.

“A young person is driving a vehicle, they know that their friend is going to go in and possibly rob the store, but they have no knowledge that they’re going to commit murder,” said Sen. Raumesh Akbari, the sponsor of a bill that would change the law. “The person goes in, commits murder, and then the driver is charged with murder.”
