FARGO — This summer’s active weather patterns have taken a devastating toll on farmers across the region, especially on their finances, at a cost of about $94 million.

In June, several tornadoes ripped through fields and communities, costing farmers tens of millions of dollars. The storms struck over about three days, between June 19-22.

An agriculture expert on those storms says it further emphasizes the importance of planning for the unexpected.

“This year’s planting season started with uncertainty,” said Miranda Meehan, NDSU Extension disaster education coordinator. “We started out really dry, worried about doing drought programming and being able to recover from wildfires out in western North Dakota.”
