The South Rim at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park will reopen to the public on Monday, Aug. 18.

The South Rim has been closed to the public since July 10 because of the South Rim Fire, which was sparked by lightning. The fire, as of Thursday afternoon, remains active, 52% contained at 4,232 acres.

Starting Aug. 18, visitors will be able to drive the South Rim Road to the visitor center, access Tomichi and Gunnison Point overlooks and visit the park store. Visitors can also see “the forces of nature and the mosaic of burned and unburned vegetation”, per a National Park Service (NPS) statement.

The South Rim will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The entrance gate will lock at 6 p.m.

The visitor center and park store will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
