Jackie Bezos, the mother of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has died at the age of 78 from complications of illness.

A statement posted online by the Bezos Family Foundation says Jackie Bezos died at her home in Miami, Florida.

“A quiet final chapter to a life that taught all of us, friends and family alike, the true meaning of grit and determination, kindness, and service to others,” the statement says.

Bezos died of Lewy body dementia, described by the National Institute on Aging as a “complex and challenging brain disorder.” The disease affects chemicals in the brain and “can lead to problems with thinking, movement, behavior, mood, and other body functions.”
