WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Caltrans is set to open a new lane on Highway 50 near the Yolo Causeway in West Sacramento to alleviate the notorious traffic bottleneck that often backs up for miles.
"It used to be 20 minutes. Now it's 45 minutes to an hour and sometimes longer, depending on the traffic accident. That's even worse," said Robert Wilkins, a West Sacramento resident.
Ongoing roadwork hasn't helped the frustration, but starting Friday, Caltrans will open a new lane, hoping to finally ease the congestion.
"One of the lines that was closed, we already paved it. It has new pavement, so it's being open to try to alleviate that bottleneck," said Sergio Ochoa with Caltrans.
The traffic split will begin west of Jefferson Boulevard.
"I know they're trying to make it better out there a
