The week’s almost over and temperatures are cooler, but several beaches across Massachusetts are closed off to visitors on Friday.
Among the 56 beaches closed on Friday, most are closed due to high levels of bacteria found in the water, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). Elevated levels of bacteria in the water can be harmful to anyone who enters the water or consumes it.
Cyanobacteria, or algae, blooms also led to the closures of several beaches, DPH stated. These algae can release toxins into the water that are harmful to people and animals, prompting officials to close these beaches.
Another closure at Walden Pond State Reservation is due to ongoing construction on a new, state-of-the-art $6.1 million bathhouse that will last all of summer 2025. Red
