DETROIT — Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel has already said he’s not planning on playing starters in the team’s second preseason game.

He left the door slightly ajar when he last spoke ahead of Thursday’s second of two joint practices with the Detroit Lions this week, indicating the day’s session could be a factor in the final decision, but odds are he’s not reversing course after saying as much as he did.

So that means starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who led one solid drive down to the 1-yard line in Sunday’s preseason opener at the Chicago Bears, should be in a baseball cap on the sideline near McDaniel and quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell as backup Zach Wilson gets the start at Saturday’s exhibition against the Lions at Ford Field, while rookie Quinn Ewers finishes it.
