Last Friday, Devin Williams reached rock bottom for the second time this season. After recovering from his ridiculously brutal April with steady relief for the better part of three months, the Yankees’ closer started to show some cracks in the façade during some late-July outings where he narrowly avoided blowing the save. The bottom began to give out on July 29th against the Rays, when he coughed up a go-ahead two-run homer at the hands of Josh Lowe.

A week later, it got worse. On August 4th in Texas, Williams did the unthinkable, allowing 2025 Joc Pederson to barrel up a changeup to tie a game the Yankees eventually lost.

Following a third rough outing from Williams the next day, the Yankees were short in the bullpen when their series opener against the Astros went to extra innings. Aa
