Archaeologists in shíshálh Nation have identified 41 unmarked graves, bringing the community total to 81.

It is a recurring story that First Peoples in Canada know too well, with ongoing searches occurring across the country.

“We are deeply saddened, but these numbers are not a surprise to us. We have always believed our Elders,” said Chief Lenora Joe.

“This wasn’t a school, it wasn’t a choice, and the children who attended were stolen.”

St. Augustine’s was Sechelt’s first residential school institution that opened on June 28, 1904. It burned down on May 25, 1917.

A second school was built and opened on June 15, 1922 and was in operation until it closed on June 22, 1975.
