AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Although summer moisture in the Texas Panhandle has helped our crops, the weather has taken a toll on livestock’s skin.
Open wounds and sunburns are all dangerous to animals that are outside regularly.
“Photosensitization is a skin condition that horses or cow will have on their body especially when they have white spots,” said Texas Tech Associate Professor Jennifer Koziol.
This condition makes animals more prone to sunburns and presents it self as crusty sunburn patch.
“Often times with that, when skin gets damaged by the sun, a bacterial infection can set in,” said Koziol.
The High Plains is often referred to as the cattle feeding capital of the world. This makes it more important for owners of livestock to check their cattle often.
